The Problem

Selling second-hand is broken

You have an unused Rolex, a pair of concert tickets you can't use, or last year's iPhone. OLX and Facebook Marketplace are full of time-wasters who negotiate hard and disappear at the last minute.

Meanwhile, the people who'd genuinely love your item simply can't afford the full asking price. Both sides lose.

Win-Win Design

Built for both
sellers and buyers

Vottery eliminates the zero-sum dynamic of traditional resale. Everyone wins something — sellers get certainty, buyers get a shot at something great.

For Sellers

Guaranteed revenue. Zero negotiation.

List your item, set the number of coupons, and watch them sell. Once the target is hit, a winner is drawn and you pocket the full price — no flaking, no haggling, no discount pressure.

✓ Full price, guaranteed
For Buyers

Win big. Spend very little.

Buy one or more coupons at a micro price for a real chance to win something worth 100x more. The Rolex draw, the concert tickets, the limited edition sneakers — all within reach.

✓ Fraction of the price

Everything a marketplace needs to be exciting

How It Works

Simple for buyers.
Rewarding for sellers.

Two parallel flows, one clean experience.

01

Seller lists the item

Uploads photos, sets full price (e.g. ₹8,50,000) and coupon count (e.g. 200). Coupon price is auto-calculated at ₹4,250 each.

02

Buyers purchase coupons

Anyone can buy 1–10 coupons via UPI. Each coupon is a unique entry code. Progress bars drive excitement as the draw fills up.

03

Winner is drawn

Once all coupons sell, a random winner is selected. Seller receives guaranteed full revenue. Winner claims the item.

Why I built this: I came across a news story about a man in a tier-2 town who needed to sell his land urgently for ₹15 lakhs but couldn't find a buyer. His solution was remarkable — he created 3,000 coupons at ₹500 each, ran a lottery, and walked away with exactly ₹15 lakhs. The buyer who won paid ₹500 for land worth ₹15 lakhs. Both sides won. That story stuck with me. I wanted to build an app that made this model accessible for everyday items — turning unsellable goods into fair, exciting draws where sellers get certainty and buyers get a real shot at something they couldn't otherwise afford.

What's hard to get right

Vottery's core mechanic is exciting but creates a real tension: someone who buys into 3 draws and wins nothing has lost real money and has every reason to leave. These are the design problems I'd prioritize solving.

⚠️

The Repeat Loser Problem

A buyer who enters 3–4 draws without winning has spent meaningful money and has nothing to show for it. Unlike gambling where the feedback loop is immediate, Vottery draws can take days or weeks to close — making losses feel worse, not better.

→ The core retention risk for the platform

🎯

Loyalty Credit System

Every coupon purchase earns loyalty points regardless of outcome. After accumulating enough points (e.g. ₹2,000 spent), the buyer unlocks a free coupon entry or a guaranteed slot in a low-value draw — something tangible for staying engaged.

Mitigation: reward spend, not just wins

📊

Near-Miss Transparency

After every draw, losers see their rank: "You held coupon #47. Winner was #183. You were in the top 25%." Turning a loss into a statistic keeps users engaged and builds the perception of fairness — you were close, not just unlucky.

Mitigation: make losing feel informative

🛡️

Loss Streak Protection

After 3 consecutive draws without winning, a user's next coupon purchase gets 2× lottery weight — doubling their odds without changing the payout structure for the seller. Resets on win. Gives high-engagement users a reason to keep going.

Mitigation: reward persistence, not just luck

💸

Spend Threshold Cashback

If a buyer spends more than ₹X on the platform in a 90-day window without a single win, a 10–15% cashback credit is applied to their wallet. Caps the downside for high-frequency users and signals that the platform has their back.

Mitigation: cap the pain of bad luck streaks

🧩

What I'd Validate First

Before building any mitigation, I'd instrument the drop-off: do users churn after loss #1 or loss #3? If it's after #1, the problem is expectation-setting, not loyalty mechanics. The fix might just be better onboarding copy, not a loyalty engine.

→ Measure before building
